NOW YOU SEE IT: The MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS
The New Orleans iteration opened in October 2024, and the venue smartly weaves a few local references into the mix. Perspectives collapse in smartly engineered concert halls, and the eyes of a slick jazzman track you as you walk by. The illusion works on different levels—as well as the superficial optics, it is history being presented as entertainment, as science.
You can appear as a giant or as a tiny version of yourself, play poker with five personal clones, or just marvel at any one of the dozens of mind-bending optical tricks. It’s not frustrating, though, as there are on-site ‘Illusion Experts’ to help explain what’s happening or how to get the most out of any exhibit. Each station also includes explanations, so you can fully understand the science and the psychology behind why your perceptions are betraying you.
Fans of optical illusions can fill their boots in the gist shop, which sells everything from miniature versions of the exhibits to puzzles, illusion-inspired apparel, quirky toys, plasma lights, and infinity mirrors. You can spend as much time as you like, and set your own pace if there are illusions that you just can’t stop trying to work out. Some of the exhibits are aimed at younger guests, so adults could skip those, . You could likely go through, trying most things at a decent clip, in around 45 minutes.
Everyone I saw here was having the time of their lives. It’s hard to remember a museum where reactions were so vivid and authentic, and people seemed genuinely delighted (when they weren’t being bamboozled) by the trickery.
